Carol Gill - background and experience

Initially secretarially trained Carol has worked in the industrial sector in both purchasing and sales departments. On returning to work after her family had flown the nest Carol started to work with children in an educational environment becoming a Laboratory Assistant in a comprehensive school. After a brief period in the retail business, Carol returned to working with children by joining a local authority Social Service department.

Carol's experience is from the bottom up as she returned to her career roots by starting as a secretarial assistant in an extremely busy Children and Families Team. She moved to a position that included an introduction to social work as well as partly administration. This involved supporting the Team Manager to plan work loads, undertaking research tasks, monitoring looked after and child protection reviewing systems, and reviewing the funding for playgroup places for the under fives.

When her post became that of unqualified social worker Carol undertook case responsibility for children in need cases including assessment, planning and reviewing of children and their families. Carol also co-worked child protection and looked after children cases with qualified staff members.

During these three positions Carol studied firstly, for a City and Guilds Certificate in Playcare Work with 7-11 year olds. She then achieved a Diploma in Applied Social Science before reading for, and obtaining, a B.Sc.(Hons) in Social Science and Social History with the Open University. Carol also successfully completed an NVQ in Business Administration Level 3, before undertaking the Diploma in Social Work.

Since qualifying as a social worker Carol has experience in all areas of children and families work. This includes assessing, planning, implementing and reviewing care plans for children in need, those on the child protection register and children and young people who are looked after by the local authority. Carol has undertaken direct work with children and life story work for those children in the care system. Carol has prepared applications for court, and written statements and care plans in care proceedings before the court, and attended court and given evidence.

Carol is able to maintain a sense of humour whilst providing a mature, sensitive and well-balanced approach to her work. She has the capacity to work under pressure with a structured approach to work commitments, and a willingness to learn and actively search for new skills and techniques. Carol is currently studying for an M.A. in Social Science.
